Tennessee State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG) and TNSTEP have partnered to develop a new webinar series on increasing access to core instruction and inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities.
A major area of emphasis of the State Personnel Development Grant is the work being done with general education teachers using various techniques and tools to effectively reach ALL learners. Today’s classrooms are more inclusive and diverse than ever. Information from this webinar series will enhance teachers’ skills to be responsive to the learning styles and needs of students with and without disabilities in the classroom and provide parents with practical tools to use to give effective input to teachers that will help their children be successful.

Learning Objectives for this webinar:
- An overview of a continuum of services and the least restrictive environment
- Increase understanding of the general education initiative RTI2 (response to intervention and instruction) and special education as the most intensive intervention
- How to use the information to effectively engage in their child’s education as full, active, and informed participants in the education process
Presenters:
Dana Johnson | Special Education Interventionist West Division | Tennessee Department of Education Special Populations
Dana serves as an interventionist for the TDOE with the State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG) in West TN. She has been in education for 17 years and her roles have included School Psychologist and Special Education Supervisor. Duties and opportunities in her School Psychologist role included Child Find and IDEA identification, FBA and Behavior Intervention Plans, counseling, RTI Fidelity checks, collaboration with Education Professionals, and parent consultations. Her leadership role responsibilities included conducting Student Support Team meetings, Individualized Education Plan meetings, oversight of federal and local budgets, and program planning for Students with Disabilities.
Karen Harrison | Executive Director | TNSTEP
Karen was appointed Executive Director of TNSTEP in 2009. She has more than 25 years of experience in the field of special education rights. She is the parent of a 26-year-old daughter with
special needs and special gifts. Karen has personally navigated special education systems from early intervention through adult services with her daughter. Her first-hand knowledge has enriched her work with families across Tennessee since she became a TNSTEP employee in 1994. Karen holds a certificate in nonprofit management and excels at bringing awareness to parental rights. She works closely with families to develop strategies to improve educational outcomes for their children. She also focuses on systemic change in the areas of inclusion, disability rights, and parent empowerment.
