This webinar discussed the difference between characteristics of dyslexia identified through the general education setting and dyslexia as a specific learning disability identified under IDEA (special education) or as a disability under Section 504. We will discuss the support options for students who are struggling in reading and ways in which parents can be better informed to discuss concerns with their child’s school.
Presenter: Jessica Dainty has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), an MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University, and a PhD in Literacy Studies from Middle Tennessee State University. She worked in public education for twelve years as a classroom special education teacher and as a system-wide consulting teacher with the Putnam County Schools special education department before moving to her current position as the Manager of Statewide Dyslexia Strategy for the Tennessee Department of Education She has adjunct taught at Tennessee Technological University in the English department and in the department of Curriculum and Instruction. She is a published novelist and is passionate about both the science of reading and the love of language. She loves her work supporting educators to ensure all children learn to read.
